A Kitchen Designed Around Independence: Creating a Beautiful Accessible Space for Wheelchair Living
At Anglia Kitchens & Bedrooms, every project starts with the same question: how can we create a space that works perfectly for the people who use it every day?
Sometimes that means designing a kitchen around a busy family lifestyle. Sometimes it means maximising storage in a compact room. And sometimes it means rethinking almost every element of a kitchen to ensure it supports independence, accessibility and ease of use without compromising on style.
This recent kitchen project was one of those occasions.
Our client Mr Armes, uses a wheelchair, and the brief was clear from the outset. He wanted a kitchen that would allow him to cook, prepare food and move around his space comfortably and confidently, while still delivering beautiful design, premium finishes and practical storage.
The result is a stunning bespoke kitchen that combines thoughtful accessibility features with timeless design.
Accessibility Without Compromise
For many years, accessible kitchens were often viewed as purely functional spaces, with design and aesthetics taking a back seat.
Today’s accessible kitchens can be every bit as beautiful as any luxury kitchen, and this project is a perfect example.
Working closely with the client, we carefully considered how every area of the room would be used. Heights, reach distances, appliance positioning and storage access all played a crucial role in the design process.
The aim was simple; to create a kitchen that gave the client greater independence whilst ensuring the room felt elegant, welcoming and enjoyable to spend time in.
A Bespoke Height-Adjustable Workstation
One of the standout features of this project is the bespoke rise-and-fall work surface.
We designed and installed a specialist height-adjustable worktop that can be raised or lowered at the touch of a button, allowing the client to position the work surface at the most comfortable height for food preparation and day-to-day tasks.
This feature transforms usability for wheelchair users, providing easy access beneath the worktop while maintaining a seamless appearance within the overall kitchen design.
It’s a perfect example of how modern technology can be integrated into a kitchen in a way that enhances everyday life without drawing attention to itself.
Thoughtful Storage Solutions Throughout
Storage was another important consideration.
The kitchen incorporates a range of clever storage features designed to make items easier to access from a seated position.
Pull-down basket wall cabinets allow contents to be brought down to a more accessible height, reducing the need to stretch or rely on assistance.
Tall larder units provide generous storage capacity while incorporating practical internal solutions, including pull-out rotating baskets and dedicated storage for household essentials such as an ironing board.
Deep drawer storage has also been used extensively throughout the design, making pots, pans and everyday items easier to organise and retrieve.
Every cabinet was carefully considered to ensure the kitchen worked with the client rather than creating unnecessary obstacles.
Rich Materials and Timeless Design
While accessibility was central to the brief, aesthetics remained equally important.
The kitchen features beautiful oak veneer slab doors finished in a sophisticated Royal Navy blue, creating a striking contrast against the warm oak cabinetry.
The rich navy tones bring depth and character to the room, while the natural timber elements add warmth and texture.
Crystal Marble Formica worktops provide a practical and durable surface while delivering the luxurious appearance of natural stone. Matching upstands complete the look, creating a clean and cohesive finish throughout the space.
The overall result feels contemporary, elegant and timeless; a kitchen designed to look as good as it performs.
Premium Neff Appliances
The kitchen is equipped with a range of premium Neff appliances, carefully selected for performance, reliability and ease of use.
These include:
- Neff electric oven
- Neff induction hob
- Neff microwave
- Neff extractor
- Neff integrated dishwasher
The induction hob provides a safer cooking environment, while the positioning of appliances was carefully considered to maximise accessibility and convenience.
A stainless steel sink arrangement with twin Sterling taps further enhances practicality while complementing the overall design aesthetic.
Transforming the Entire Room
This project involved much more than simply replacing kitchen cabinets.
Our team removed the existing floor tiles, carried out extensive plastering works, squared off an existing archway to improve the layout, completed all electrical and plumbing installations, and fitted a new Karndean Grey Castello Marble floor.
The result is a complete room transformation that feels cohesive from floor to ceiling.
Every detail was considered to ensure the finished space not only looked exceptional but functioned effortlessly for its owner.
The Importance of Inclusive Design
One of the most rewarding aspects of projects like this is seeing how thoughtful design can genuinely improve someone’s day-to-day life.
A well-designed kitchen should be accessible to everyone, regardless of age, mobility or physical ability.
By combining bespoke craftsmanship, innovative accessibility solutions and premium materials, we were able to create a kitchen that supports independence while delivering the luxury finish our clients expect.
It’s a reminder that great kitchen design isn’t simply about how a room looks. It’s about how it makes people feel and how effectively it supports their lifestyle every single day.
